I went to Japan on an Artist Residency

In 2022 I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Japan before the borders opened (crazy how long ago lockdowns seem now!) to undertake a six week artist residency in the countryside of Gunma prefecture, Japan with seven other artists from around the world.

It was a massive journey for me being my first time solo travelling to a country I barely speak the language and there were so many moments that pulled me out of my comfort zone. I grew so much confidence in self during that short time and can honestly say it has been one of the best experiences of my life and one of the hardest!

I learnt a lot about myself and my practice, a lot about wood firing ceramics (it was my first time!) and a lot about other cultures and customs. I am constantly on the search to figure out who I am and I feel that this experience gave me some answers but also uncovered even more questions.

The small community of Onishi where we stayed welcomed us with warmth and immense generosity that I am still in awe of. At the end of the residency we held an exhibition and all of the artists showcased our work to the locals of the town and we even had our photo taken for the local paper! We finished off our stay with an epic gathering at the artist house where a feast was cooked and shared. I am forever grateful for my time in that beautiful part of the world and I am pleased to share that I will be finally sharing the work made during my residency back here in Melbourne in February 2024.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information to come.
