National Emerging Art Prize

In Your Absence, stoneware chair sculpture by Emily Brookfield. Image captured by artist.

I have just completed a new chair sculpture and have entered it into the National Emerging Art Prize.

It has so much movement for a static object that I can see it becoming conscious and walking away. I wanted to go bigger with my chair sculptures and this is the biggest chair I’ve made so far (hand for scale in hero image). My ambition is to go even bigger but this was the largest my kiln could accomodate. I thoroughly enjoyed the making process for this particular piece. Being more fluid with my surface treatments and exploring a more experimental approach. There’s something really satisfying about intuitive making. Allowing the medium to guide my hand instead of trying to make it conform to what I believe it should be.
